AL Central Notes: Caminero, Melton, White Sox, Holderman
MLB Trade Rumors • • sports
Key Points:
- The ALCS matchup between the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays has renewed scrutiny of the 2021 trade sending Junior Caminero to Tampa Bay for Tobias Myers, who never pitched in the majors for Cleveland.
- Myers was later traded to the Giants and has since become a quality reliever with the Brewers in 2024, compounding the Guardians' regret over the trade.
- The Rays initially considered other Guardians prospects before choosing Caminero, a then lightly-regarded 18-year-old, who has since emerged as a future All-Star.
- Tampa Bay scouts, particularly Eduardo Sanchez, praised Caminero's attitude, maturity, and hitting potential, making the trade a significant win for the Rays.
- With the Guardians leading the ALCS 2-1, the trade remains a painful reminder of missed opportunities as Tampa Bay continues to challenge for the pennant.
