An Innocuous Faith-Based Historical Musical
Variety • • entertainment
Key Points:
- "Drummer Boy" is a patriotic musical set at the start of the Revolutionary War, created by the Smallbone brothers of Christian band For King + Country, appealing mainly to Christian audiences and fans of faith-based entertainment.
- The film explores themes of societal forgiveness and reconciliation amid colonial tensions, focusing on two families with differing social statuses and conflicting loyalties during the war.
- While not historically rigorous or gritty, the movie offers a sentimental, polished portrayal with contemporary pop music and a romantic subplot, avoiding overt religious messaging in favor of universal moral themes.
- The production features attractive cinematography and period costumes but is noted for its sanitized depiction of 18th-century America, including minimal reference to race and slavery despite touching on interracial love.
- "Drummer Boy" is recommended primarily for existing fans of Angel Studios and For King + Country, providing a pleasant yet somewhat simplistic and contrived musical experience unlikely to convert skeptical viewers.
