Deadline • • entertainment
Key Points:
- NBC and Universal Television have appointed Bruce Helford, a seasoned sitcom veteran, as the new showrunner for the freshman multi-camera comedy Newlyweds, replacing Gail Lerner who was recently fired.
- The series, co-created by Lerner and Jamie Lee Curtis, is currently on an extended hiatus to allow Helford time to acclimate; production is set to resume in November after filming Episode 8 of 13.
- Helford brings four decades of experience with popular sitcoms such as Roseanne, The Conners, and George Lopez, known for managing strong personalities and delivering high episode counts.
- Newlyweds is a romantic comedy about a spontaneous marriage between a free-spirited woman (Tèa Leoni) and a buttoned-up professor (Tim Daly), with Curtis also starring; the show premieres on October 23 at 8:30 PM.
- Despite Helford’s background primarily in male-led and family sitcoms, his early writing experience on the romantic sitcom Anything But Love, starring Curtis, aligns with the rom-com tone of Newlyweds.
