Digimon Story: Time Stranger on Switch 2 is a solid port and very good handheld, but needs some more work
Key Points:
- Bandai Namco's Digimon Story: Time Stranger launched last year on PS5, Xbox, and PC, with the PS5 version capped at 30fps and the PC version supporting up to 144fps; the game is now being updated with a new performance mode and released on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
- The Switch 2 version offers two modes: Quality mode targets 4K 30fps docked and 1080p 30fps handheld, while Performance mode targets 1080p 60fps handheld and 1080p docked with lower resolution; however, jagged edges and reduced texture filtering are noticeable.
- Despite some visual downgrades compared to PS5, the Switch 2 port is regarded as the best portable experience for the game, outperforming Steam Deck and ROG Ally versions in handheld mode.
- Performance issues persist, including frame pacing problems in Quality mode and unstable frame rates in 60fps Performance mode, especially in crowded or open areas; these issues remain after the July 7 day one patch.
- The Switch 2 port is priced $10 lower than other versions and includes the same editions and DLC; Bandai Namco is expected to improve post-processing, UI resolution, and performance in future updates, with a full multi-platform comparison forthcoming.
