Google starts rolling out Documents backup on Android
Key Points:
- Google has introduced new toggle settings on Pixel devices allowing users to control the backup of SMS, MMS, RCS messages, Call history, and Device settings, which were previously always backed up automatically.
- The update is rolling out with Google Play services version 26.25 and includes confirmation that "SMS & MMS messages" backup also covers RCS messages.
- Google now counts all Android backup data towards Google Account storage, increasing average user backups by about 40 MB.
- A new local Documents backup feature is being tested, enabling automatic saving of downloaded documents (e.g., .DOC, .PPT, .XLS, .PDF) to Google Drive with encryption and device-specific folders.
- The Documents backup can be manually triggered or set to run daily, and disabling the feature does not delete previously backed-up files from Google Drive.
