Secure Android and iPhone RCS messaging just got a big step closer
Key Points:
- Apple is developing end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for RCS messaging in iOS 26.3 Beta 2, aiming to enable secure conversations between iPhone and Android users.
- Carrier bundles in the beta reveal a new setting for carriers to activate RCS encryption, but currently only four French carriers have the code, and none have enabled the feature yet.
- Apple adopted RCS texting with iOS 18 to improve messaging between iPhone and Android devices, but E2EE for these messages has been missing until now.
- The GSMA’s Universal Profile 3.0 specifications, announced in March, include MLS-based E2EE, which Apple plans to implement for interoperable secure RCS chats.
