The Liberty Need to Do Right by Breanna Stewart

Key Points:

• The New York Liberty's season ended with a semifinal sweep by the Atlanta Dream, highlighting ongoing struggles with team identity and defensive consistency, as reflected in their seventh-ranked defensive rating.
• A critical late-game timeout miscommunication in Game 2, where the Liberty failed to use a reset timeout, symbolized broader coaching and organizational uncertainties, with coach Chris DeMarco deflecting responsibility and players expressing mixed feelings about his return.
• Despite having star players like Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu, the Liberty lacked a cohesive team culture compared to Finals contenders, raising questions about leadership and strategic direction under DeMarco and GM Jonathan Kolb.
• Injuries to key players, including Ionescu and Satou Sabally, hampered the team's performance, though the Liberty made history as the first No. 8 seed to sweep a No. 1 seed in the playoffs, underscoring both resilience and unmet championship aspirations.
• With Stewart entering her prime and again in MVP discussions, the organization faces pressure to capitalize on her talent by solidifying coaching decisions and team identity to avoid further missed opportunities.
