Biff Poggi shoots his shot, goes public with his desire to become Maryland's head football coach

Key Points:

• Maryland parted ways with head coach Mike Locksley after a 2-5 start (0-4 in Big Ten play), opening a national search for his replacement.
• Biff Poggi, a Baltimore native and former Michigan associate head coach and Charlotte head coach, publicly expressed strong interest in the Maryland job despite not yet speaking with the athletic department.
• Poggi emphasized the need for structural changes beyond a coaching swap, proposing a CEO-like leadership role to align stakeholders, aggressive transfer portal recruitment focused on local talent, and significant investment in player compensation estimated at $25-28 million annually.
• Poggi highlighted his extensive coaching background, including success at Baltimore high schools and Michigan, and suggested targeting experienced assistant coaches such as Chip Kelly and Wink Martindale, though these names were illustrative rather than confirmed.
• Maryland has appointed co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim as interim head coach for the rest of the season while conducting a national search led by athletic director Jim Smith.
