New York Post • • world
Key Points:
- Beijing has confirmed it is discussing a potential historic meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping, President Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen this month.
- Experts suggest the meeting would likely be largely symbolic, focused on a photo opportunity rather than substantive discussions, due to conflicting interests among the three leaders.
- Trump aims to maintain a fragile trade truce with China and has expressed interest in discussing nuclear arms control, while Putin is focused on the war in Ukraine, which complicates potential dialogue.
- China seeks to carefully manage the optics of the meeting without engaging in contentious topics like Ukraine, arms control, or Iran, aiming to avoid being seen as dividing global power.
- Analysts note that while the summit would be a diplomatic coup for Putin, the event may yield limited concrete outcomes and primarily serve as a historic spectacle.
