Democrat Sherrod Brown unseats Sen. Jon Husted in heated Ohio Senate race
NBC News • • nation
Key Points:
- Democratic former Senator Sherrod Brown won a closely contested and expensive Ohio Senate race, defeating Republican incumbent Jon Husted, NBC News projects.
- Brown will serve the remaining two years of the term vacated by JD Vance, who left after being elected vice president, marking Brown's return to the Senate after losing his 2024 reelection bid.
- The campaign was marked by negative advertising and highlighted key issues such as the war with Iran, rising gas prices, economic concerns, and opposition to data center construction for AI companies, which hurt Husted's candidacy.
- Husted, appointed last year to fill Vance’s seat and a former lieutenant governor, faced challenges including backlash linked to the GOP gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and criticism of his focus on data centers.
- Despite strong support from former President Donald Trump, who campaigned vigorously for Husted, Brown’s longstanding political career and strategic attacks on Husted’s record contributed to his victory.
