FCPS superintendent accused of using fake legal threat email
Key Points:
- Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins allegedly distributed a falsified email claiming to be from law firm Kaplan, Johnson Abate and Bird, threatening a defamation lawsuit, which the law firm denies having sent or worked with Liggins.
- The forged email was reportedly slipped under the office doors of Kentucky Representative Adrielle Camuel and a FCPS employee in May, leading Camuel to report the incident to the district on June 5.
- Following the incident, the FCPS School Board unanimously placed Liggins on paid administrative leave and appointed Dr. Bill Bradford as interim superintendent.
- Liggins has served as FCPS superintendent since June 2021, recently extending his contract through 2029, amid challenges including a disclosed $16 million budget shortfall for the 2025-2026 school year.
- The Kentucky educator labor union 120 United-AFT, of which Camuel is a member, has released a statement on the situation, while attorneys for the involved parties have been contacted for comment.
