Gina Hinojosa wins race for Texas governor over Greg Abbott : NPR
NPR • • general
Key Points:
- Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, ending over three decades of Republican control of the Texas governor's office and denying Abbott a fourth term.
- Hinojosa, an Austin state representative and former school board president, campaigned on public education, household costs, and criticism of Republican leadership, opposing Abbott's private-school voucher program.
- Upon taking office in January 2027, Hinojosa will be the first Latina governor of Texas and the first Democratic governor since Ann Richards in 1995.
- Despite her victory, Hinojosa is expected to face a Republican-controlled legislature, making it challenging to pass significant legislation.
- Political analysts suggest Hinojosa’s win reflects voter frustration with Washington and former President Donald Trump, marking a significant political shift in Texas.
