GTA 6 Reportedly Has Sex Scenes, But We All Know That’s Not Necessary

Key Points:

• The upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI, rated M for Mature, has sparked concern due to its anticipated inclusion of sex scenes and its history of depicting women in a hypersexualized and often violent manner.
• The GTA franchise has long faced criticism for objectifying female characters, including allowing players to attack and kill sex workers, raising worries about the potential negative influence on impressionable young players amid a cultural backdrop of misogynistic online ideologies.
• While the game is intended for players 17 and older, many younger teens are expected to access it, which, combined with exposure to explicit content, could contribute to the adoption of harmful views about women, according to advocacy groups and research on media effects.
• Previous controversies, such as the "hot coffee" scandal in GTA: San Andreas, highlight Rockstar's history of including hidden or explicit sexual content that led to significant backlash, lawsuits, and changes in game ratings.
• Despite some assurances from Rockstar developers that upcoming sex scenes will depict consensual relationships between main characters, skepticism remains about the franchise's ability to handle such content responsibly given its longstanding pattern of problematic portrayals.
