Licence to flail: Deepanjana Pal on the outstanding streaming series Slow Horses

Key Points:

• "Slow Horses," based on Mick Herron's books, follows a team of disgraced MI5 agents in Slough House, led by the unkempt and abrasive Jackson Lamb, who defies typical spy hero stereotypes.
• The series features a cast of flawed characters, including River Cartwright, Roddy Ho, JK Coe, Shirley Dander, and Catherine Standish, each with complex backgrounds and personal struggles, making them unexpectedly compelling protagonists.
• Season 6 intensifies the stakes as Slough House faces erasure from MI5 records and its members are targeted, bringing back past characters and delivering a tense, violent, and darkly humorous narrative.
• Kristin Scott Thomas shines as Diana Taverner, the ruthless head of MI5, while the show's strength lies in its sharp, nuanced writing that balances real-world espionage conflicts with character-driven drama.
• Unlike typical glamorous spy thrillers, "Slow Horses" offers a gritty, realistic portrayal of espionage, with burnt-out agents and messy realities, positioning Jackson Lamb as a uniquely memorable lead in the genre.
