Mariners Granted Permission To Interview Joe Espada For Managerial Opening
MLB Trade Rumors • • sports
Key Points:
- The Seattle Mariners have a managerial vacancy after parting ways with Dan Wilson and have received permission to interview Houston Astros manager Joe Espada, whose contract expires at the end of the month amid expectations Houston may seek a new manager.
- Espada, promoted to Astros manager in 2023 after serving as bench coach, led Houston to an AL West title in 2024 but faced postseason struggles and a declining roster due to aging stars and departures, contributing to the team's recent underperformance.
- Astros owner Jim Crane is known for making bold personnel changes, and while Espada’s future remains uncertain, his managerial reputation remains strong, making him a potential candidate for other teams beyond the Mariners.
- Mariners president Jerry Dipoto prefers candidates with managerial experience but is open to other options; recent coaching staff changes following a disappointing 2026 season have left the organization searching for new leadership.
