Key Points:
- "Saturday Night Live" host Shane Gillis faced backlash for a joke in his Oct. 10 opening monologue, where he criticized women's gym attire by saying they dress like "whores."
- Cast member Michael Che, who appeared on TODAY to promote his Netflix special, said he did not see Gillis' joke until the next day and did not think much about it.
- Che described the controversy as part of comedy's nature, acknowledging that some people find jokes funny while others do not.
- Che explained that many writers do not see the opening monologue beforehand due to the fast-paced environment, and he focuses more on his "Weekend Update" segment, which requires more preparation.
- Che also defended the show's tradition of joke swapping between co-hosts, admitting that missing the mark happens to everyone and emphasizing understanding for those who take risks in comedy.
