Newser • • nation
Key Points:
- The Plaza Hotel in New York will close in January for a multi-year exterior restoration, expected to last around four years, according to Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.
- Details on the cost, specific restoration work, and the impact on the 181 condominium owners remain undisclosed by the operator.
- The closure will also affect the iconic Palm Court restaurant and event spaces, with nearly 400 unionized employees retaining the right to return at the same pay once the hotel reopens.
- The Plaza, a luxury hotel since 1907, has hosted numerous celebrities and notable figures, and its closure has disrupted events such as weddings, causing frustration among clients.
- Experts note the extensive facade work is surprising given previous renovations, but acknowledge the necessity of closing the hotel to maintain luxury standards during construction.
