Off-duty NYPD detective stabbed by two undocumented suspects in NYC

Key Points:

• Two suspects, Dangelo Rafael Jean Caraballo and Sneider Mejia Bautista, both Dominican citizens living in the U.S. illegally, are wanted for the attempted murder of off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes during a robbery in the Bronx.
• The suspects allegedly tried to steal Mercedes' gold chain, stabbing and slashing him multiple times when he resisted; the detective managed to chase them for two blocks before collapsing and was later released from the hospital.
• Both men have extensive criminal records in New York, including charges related to weapons, stolen property, and reckless endangerment, and were previously released by local authorities despite ICE detainer requests due to New York City's sanctuary policies.
• DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized the Biden administration's immigration policies and New York's sanctuary city stance, urging local cooperation to apprehend the suspects and prevent similar crimes.
• The suspects initially entered the U.S. unlawfully through Arizona, were apprehended, but subsequently released into the country under policies attributed to the current administration.
