Putin says Musk a ‘genius,’ Russia develops Starlink alternative

Key Points:

• Russian President Vladimir Putin praised SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as a "genius" and revealed ongoing close contact with him regarding the development of Russia's satellite internet project, Rassvet, as a potential alternative to Starlink.
• Rassvet, operated by Russian private aerospace company Bureau 1440, currently has 31 satellites in orbit, while Starlink boasts over 11,000 satellites providing internet access to 174 countries.
• Putin emphasized the importance of coordination in orbit to avoid interference and stated that despite political tensions, Russia and the U.S. continue to collaborate on satellite operations with Musk.
• The announcement comes amid ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with recent Russian drone attacks causing casualties and damage in Ukraine, and amid discussions of potential U.S.-brokered peace talks involving Putin, Zelenskyy, and Trump.
• Controversy surrounds SpaceX's Starlink service after Ukraine accused it of imposing restrictions that affected military satellite internet access, which Musk attributed to breaches of terms of service by Ukraine, a claim Ukraine denies.
