The PlayStation 5 Can Finally Play Your Old PS2 Discs - Here's How
BGR • • technology
Key Points:
- True backward compatibility with physical discs ended with the PlayStation 4; PS5 supports only PS4 discs physically, while older games require digital emulation, which Sony releases slowly and in limited numbers.
- A new port of the PCSX2 emulator, called PS5SX2, has been released for jailbroken PS5 consoles, allowing users to dump and play PS2 game discs that are on DVD, but not CD-based titles like many PS2 and all PS1 games.
- PS5SX2 version 2.01 adds features such as RetroAchievements support, online play for select games, HD texture packs, and other enhancements, improving the emulation experience on PS5 hardware.
- The lead developer, Swordpdf, announced an upcoming PS3 emulator (PS5SX3) for jailbroken PS5s that will enable dumping and playing PS3 discs, potentially bringing near-complete backward compatibility to the console.
- Jailbreaking is required to run these emulators, which limits access to newer PS5 games that need updated firmware, and currently restricts users to older firmware versions compatible with the jailbreak.
