CNBC • • general
Key Points:
- President Donald Trump suggested that new White House press secretary Katie Zacharia should reconsider her role, following criticism of her initial press briefing and questions about her legal background.
- Zacharia faced a difficult first press briefing, delivering halting remarks and answering questions from only three reporters, which contributed to concerns about her performance.
- Trump acknowledged that Zacharia has been treated harshly by the media, including criticism from Fox News host Sean Hannity, and said he told her she doesn't have to continue if she doesn't want to.
- Trump indicated he would allow Zacharia to decide whether to remain in the position, leaving her future as press secretary uncertain just days after her appointment.
- The White House did not immediately comment on Trump's remarks as he spoke to reporters before heading to a political rally in Georgia ahead of the midterm elections.
