The Daily Beast • • business
Key Points:
- President Donald Trump has held emergency discussions about potentially imposing a diesel export ban to address soaring fuel prices amid a crisis worsened by the Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz closure.
- The talks, leaked to the Financial Times, reveal consideration of curbs on international diesel sales and warnings to allied countries like the U.K. about possible supply disruptions.
- Despite pressure from rural Republican lawmakers to protect farmers and truckers, White House officials and oil lobbyists caution that a ban could raise domestic prices further, and no final decision has been made.
- Rising diesel costs are fueling voter dissatisfaction that threatens GOP control of both the House and Senate in the November midterm elections.
- Trump is reportedly "very seriously considering" the ban, with White House staff largely opposed, highlighting uncertainty about whether the president will take sudden action.
