UK to deploy fighter jets to help Saudis against Houthi attacks

Key Points:

• The U.K. will deploy Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to help defend against Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks on critical energy and civilian infrastructure, with the jets designated for defensive use only.
• The Iranian-backed Houthi militia, based in Yemen, has recently escalated attacks on Saudi Arabia, including missile strikes on three airports, resulting in casualties and significant damage.
• U.K. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the attacks as "despicable" and emphasized the importance of protecting Saudi airspace to maintain regional stability and safeguard U.K. economic and security interests.
• The U.K. will also send an Atlas A400M transport aircraft and military advisers to support Saudi Arabia, building on existing equipment and personnel already deployed in the country.
• Downing Street maintains that U.K. support is proportionate and defensive, aiming to prevent regional instability that could negatively impact the U.K., rejecting claims that this involvement risks deeper entanglement in the Saudi-Houthi conflict.
