US midterm elections 2026 live updates: Democrats win control of Congress as voters punish Trump

Key Points:

• Democrats have won control of Congress, securing 54 Senate seats and 225 House seats, surpassing the thresholds needed to reclaim majorities in both chambers, signaling a significant rejection of Donald Trump’s agenda.
• Historic wins include James Talarico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas for the Senate, as well as Abdul El-Sayed becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate in Michigan; several gubernatorial firsts were also achieved by Democrats, including Georgia’s first Black female governor, Keisha Lance Bottoms.
• Several tight races remain undecided, including the Senate contests in Mississippi and Alaska, while Republicans retained some key seats such as Pete Ricketts in Nebraska’s Senate race.
• Former President Barack Obama and other Democratic leaders praised the results as a call for unity and progressive change, while Donald Trump expressed willingness to work with the new Democratic majority, signaling potential cooperation despite his party’s losses.
• The election also saw a historic increase in Democratic women elected to the House, with over 100 women winning seats, marking a 60% rise since 2016 and reflecting voter concerns over women’s rights and social issues.
