Wreckage of Soviet World War II fighter plane, pilot's personal items found buried underground in Hungary
Key Points:
- The wreckage of a World War II-era Soviet Yakovlev Yak-1 fighter jet was discovered about 17 feet underground in the village of Törtel, Hungary, roughly 50 miles southeast of Budapest.
- Excavations began in September, led by István Kocsis from a research association, and several parts of the plane were found relatively intact, including a piece of the red star insignia.
- The recovery also included parts of the aircraft's fuselage showing the jet's side number, as well as the pilot's personal belongings, notably a book with the pilot's signature currently undergoing restoration.
- The Hungarian Museum of Military History plans to exhibit the best-preserved wreckage pieces after completing restoration and documentation by its archaeology department.
