Thats very strange
I've got the $5 amazon thing 3x so far and each time when I look at Amazon the money is there loaded, but the next day I go to buy something but the balance is $0

It could be prime is taking out because it will take out of gift card amount. Or if your account is being used by someone else. If the money is on Amazon then you need to check their website. If it's still gift card format then it means your code was stolen and used by someone else (this is fairly common which is why you should immediately use gift cards and phone cards)

You have to apply the security code and then apply the gift card code to your Amazon account.

Do you have enough to cover taxes sometimes if you don't put a credit card, the option to apply gift card balance is not available until you put in another payment method. But if you have enough to cover the taxes, then I am not sure as I never had issues. The gift cards supposedly do not expire.
