I get them from the orchard but they are picked by someone else. I have developed a serious allergy to bees and no longer enjoy picking the fruit I can.

I peel them, core and slice them, and cook them in a pot with a little water over a low/medium heat. The kind I use -Johnagolds- don't require added sugar, but you can use just about any kind of apples and add sugar or even a little cinnamon to your liking. I don't use Red Delicious apples. They feel too grainy when cooked.
