Cat destroys rugs

Our sweet tabby is destroying the carpet in my room.  He's 11 years old and was primarily an outdoor cat most of his life until about 1-1/2 years ago. Health issues. There's no stopping him. If I lock him out of my room he makes life miserable.  Giving him other places and things to scratch don't help. He has his spot. End of story. I'm thinking when he leaves us and I get a kitten, I should train the kitten to not scratch up the carpet, but I don't know the most effective way to do this. Advice?
