So I'm officially obsessed with this anime now 😆 It's a sortof mystery/romcom/drama set in a fictional country based on Tang-Dynasty China.

Apothecary Diaries (Anime)

It follows Maomao, an apothecary who gets kidnapped and sold to the emperor's palace. As much as she wants to keep her nose down and not get noticed, she can't help but solve the mystery of the emperor's heirs dying as infants, which understandably gets her super noticed lol. She ends up under the protection of a powerful eunuch, Jinshi, who makes her an unofficial detective and gives her mysteries to solve.

 

The characters and their dynamics are alot of fun, and the political intrigue makes the mysteries that much more complex. I especially like the concubine Gyoukuyo - she's very practical and perceptive without being scheming. 

 

If you liked Elsbeth or Extraordinary Attorney Woo, you'll like this one.

    For ones that have a similar sort of vibe as this one, I'd say:

- Utawarerumono (Guy with amnesia befriends small-town folks and decides to help them deal w/oppressive govt.)
- Summer Time Rendering (Kid with strange time-loop powers solves the mystery of his adopted sister's death)
- Aeon Flux (isn't anime, but its animated. Terrorist main character sabotages the bizarre and nefarious efforts of her politician ex.)

    No problem! Tbh I don't read as much manga as I would like, so I don't really have a place I go to for scanlations regularly. If I decide I want to read a manga I just Google something like "read [manga title] online free".
