As IGN Retreats From Podcasts, Fired Hosts Start Their Own
Kotaku • • technology
Key Points:
- IGN recently laid off longtime hosts Brian Altano, Seth Macy, and Max Scoville amid a strategic shift, leading them to launch their independent gaming podcast network, X Button, on Patreon.
- X Button currently offers two podcasts: a general gaming show called X Button and Ninfriendo 64, which focuses on Nintendo content, featuring industry guests and a mix of news and classic game discussions.
- IGN is scaling back its gaming podcast lineup, putting shows like Beyond! and NVC on hiatus or ending weekly episodes, with only Game Scoop continuing regular publication due to revenue concerns.
- This retreat from podcasts is notable as other media companies are expanding in the space, and former IGN staff have demonstrated podcasting’s viability through successful independent ventures like Kinda Funny.
- The X Button team emphasizes their passion and experience, motivated by community support after their sudden layoffs, aiming to rebuild their careers and maintain a connection with their audience.
