Democrats score key secretary of state wins ahead of the 2028 election

NBC News • November 4, 2026 • nation

Key Points:

Democrats won secretary of state races in key battleground states including Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and flipped Georgia, gaining crucial election oversight for the 2028 elections.
They also made inroads in traditionally Republican states by winning secretary of state offices in Indiana and Ohio, highlighting a strategic push into red territory.
In Georgia, Penny Brown Reynolds defeated a Trump-endorsed Republican candidate, campaigning on upholding election integrity and resisting unfounded election fraud claims.
Incumbent Democrats in Arizona and Nevada successfully defended their positions against far-right challengers linked to election conspiracy theories, improving on their margins from 2022.
Despite Democratic successes, Republicans retained secretary of state offices in Iowa and South Carolina, even as Democrats won other statewide races in those states.
