Gerrit Cole to start Game 1 of ALDS for Yankees against Rays
New York Post • • sports
Key Points:
- The Yankees have named Gerrit Cole as the starter for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Rays, choosing him over Carlos Rodón despite Rodón's strong late-season performance.
- Manager Aaron Boone indicated Rodón is likely to start Game 3 or 4 at Yankee Stadium if the series extends that far, with Schlittler expected for Game 2 and Fried on extended rest for later games.
- Cole, pitching his first season back from Tommy John surgery, posted a 3.61 ERA over 22 starts and has a strong playoff record with a 2.77 ERA in postseason appearances.
- Despite Rodón's impressive 1.42 ERA in his final four starts and the Rays' weaker offensive stats against left-handed pitchers, the Yankees opted for Cole due to his big-game experience and overall track record.
- The Yankees plan to use four starters throughout the series and may also utilize Rodón in a bullpen role if necessary.
