Nebraska Coach Matt Rhule Taking a Different Path than Indiana’s Curt Cignetti

Key Points:

• Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti has achieved unprecedented success in just over two years, boasting a 32-2 record, two College Football Playoff appearances, one national title, and a current 5-0 season start with a No. 7 AP ranking.
• Nebraska coach Matt Rhule, hired in late 2023, benefits from superior infrastructure and resources, including new training facilities and a $600 million stadium renovation, but faces high expectations to restore Nebraska’s historic football prominence.
• Recruiting rankings favor Nebraska (16th for Class of 2027) over Indiana (27th), with Rhule leveraging transfer portal acquisitions to strengthen key positions, while Indiana’s rise under Cignetti has shifted perceptions about what is possible for traditionally less-successful programs.
• Nebraska’s rich football heritage, including five national championships and three Heisman Trophy winners, provides a strong legacy for Rhule to promote, though much of this history predates current recruits’ lifetimes.
• Saturday’s game between undefeated Indiana and Nebraska symbolizes a clash between Cignetti’s rapid, transformative success and Rhule’s measured rebuilding approach amid differing program cultures and resources.
