Nintendo confirm replaceable battery EU Switch 2 model, end of Switch 1 production
Key Points:
- Nintendo will discontinue production of the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED models in Europe starting mid-February 2027, after about a decade of availability, but they will remain widely available through 2026.
- To comply with new European regulations, the upcoming Switch 2 and new Joy-Con models will feature user-replaceable batteries, with the Switch 2 expected to launch this autumn and new Joy-Cons arriving this summer.
- The Switch 2 will be slightly heavier (from 401g to 411g) and have a marginally reduced battery capacity (5220mAh to 5172mAh), while the full system with Joy-Cons will increase weight by about 3%.
- The Switch 2 Pro Controller will see a notable 16% reduction in battery capacity, dropping from 1070mAh to 897mAh, but will weigh 7g less.
- Nintendo plans to offer battery replacement kits for these products through the Nintendo Store in Europe and will provide more details prior to each product's release.
