The Brewers Are Beating Baseball’s Data

Key Points:

• Pat Murphy, after being initially overlooked for the Milwaukee Brewers managerial position following Craig Counsell's departure, secured the role by insisting on establishing a distinct playing style focused on team culture and personnel.
• Under Murphy's leadership, the Brewers swept the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, marking their first World Series appearance in 44 years and showcasing a throwback style of baseball emphasizing speed, contact hitting, and baserunning over home runs.
• Murphy, known for his old-school approach and emphasis on fundamentals like opposite-field hitting and aggressive baserunning, has cultivated a team culture centered on accountability, trust, and playing "baseball-y," defying modern analytics trends.
• The Brewers led the majors in stolen bases, singles, opposite field hits, and groundball hits in 2024, validating Murphy's philosophy that a team can succeed without relying on power hitting in today's data-driven game.
• The upcoming World Series promises a nostalgic matchup featuring teams with low home run totals and high steal numbers, highlighting a return to traditional baseball values championed by Murphy and embraced by Milwaukee fans.
