A Keto diet involves consuming a very low amount of carbohydrates and replacing them with fat to help your body burn fat for energy.

It's basically a very low carbohydrate, very high fat diet. The idea is that you get your body used to using fast as it's main energy source and at it steps adapts, you start burning of your stored fast too.

It is a very weird sounding diet. It was originally developed for diabetics, I believe, as a way to keep their blood sugar in a healthier range.

I believe you start thinking about avoiding sugar and carbs and have your body use fat as the main energe source. Since it burns your fat for energe as oppose to storing, you loose weight.
