It is my first time participating in events/challenges. Do they award coins as stated on the event mechanics? I just want to double check this before exerting lots of effort and time on it.

    Yes they do but you have to post in the right chat. Read the instructions for each challenge and follow the instructions.
I see lots of people posting in the general chat for steps , workout and sky gazing challenge and it's wrong but I'm not the cashwalk police.

    Most of the time if you follow the rules of the challenge they will award coins. But sometimes they screw up and you won't get the points
