The pinto bean is a variety of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). It is the most common bean in Northern Mexico and the Southwestern United States and is the cheapest bean to buy in the United States. In Spanish, "pinto" means painted, referring to the speckled appearance of the beans. It is used throughout Latin America and Spain, but it's most popular in Mexico. Refried beans are usually made from pinto beans.
