The peanut (Arachis hypogaea), is also known as the groundnut, goober pea, pindar, or monkey nut. Although used in cuisines like a nut, the peanut is not actually a nut but a legume, like beans and peas. It was first domesticated in Argentina or Bolivia at least 7600 years ago, and then spread through the rest of South America. George Washington Carver popularized the peanut in the United States and peanut butter became very popular, now consuming $800 million of peanut butter annually.
