Cowboys Hire Former NFL HC to Defensive Staff amid Struggles with Christian Parker on Hot Seat

Key Points:

• The Dallas Cowboys have hired veteran coach Mike Pettine to join their defensive coaching staff amid a challenging 2-3 start to the 2026 season.
• Pettine brings extensive NFL experience, including previous roles as head coach of the Cleveland Browns and defensive coordinator for multiple teams, most recently serving as assistant head coach and outside linebackers coach for the Minnesota Vikings before retiring in 2025.
• Pettine previously worked with current Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker during his tenure with the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2020.
• The Cowboys' defense has struggled this season, ranking second-to-last in yards allowed per game and seventh in points allowed, prompting the need for coaching changes despite acquiring star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. earlier this month.
• Dallas aims to improve their performance in their upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers, with Pettine expected to contribute to defensive adjustments moving forward.
