The lentil (Vicia lens or Lens culinaris) was domesticated in the Middle East and then spread to Europe, North Africa and India. It has been eaten since at least 11000 BC. Lentils come in a tremendous variety; I have 5 varieties growing in my garden: gray, red, yellow, black beluga, and French.
