How to get steps calculated on your Apple Watch

How do I get Apple Watch to count my steps or do I have to walk around my phone and it counts how does it calculate your steps cause I've took over 50 steps and nothing showing it says zero steps I got my watch I added it as my widget like it said but it's still not showing any steps any advice please I need some advice

    I don’t believe you can get it connected to your Apple Watch. I have one as well and hadn’t figured out so you need to keep your phone in your pocket unfortunately for it to count steps. I know it be easier for it to get connected to the watch
