Tonight I ran out of ads from the lottery game, and still had some coins pending from the last mystery box. I tried one of the other games. After completing a level, I was shown an ad (of course). After the ad, I got my last few coins
I'm still having trouble with the doubling of the mystery box coins but I found a workaround that seems to work ok.
Tap the box and watch the ad. When you tap on the X2 button, wait a few seconds. If the new ad does not start, go play the Lottery game. Play this until you have to watch an ad. Watch the ad and you'll get your doubled coins.
Go back to the mystery boxes and the next box. Etc...
Keep doing this whenever the second ad does not play.

Yes. I experienced a few times. In the middle of doing lottery, a coin earning screen topped up unexpectedly. Thank you for the reason behind it.

Glad you found a solution but I don't see ads anymore for lottery at a for past 6 weeks or so, so that won't fix mine sadly.I'm getting wayyy less coins from the 7 boxes too, I used to get the same amount from 3 boxes!! Given up asking support support help they say it must be connectivity issues which is codswallop as first box ad loads and plays fine.

I"m sorry to hear that. I have good and bad days with the mystery boxes. Recently, one of them actually paid out 100 coins. Unfortunately, that one did not offer to double it for me.
