Favism

Favism is a condition triggered by the consumption of fava beans in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, a genetic disease. This deficiency leads to the breakdown of red blood cells, causing symptoms like jaundice, dark urine, and fatigue. 🩸

Interestingly, G6PD deficiency provides an evolutionary advantage in malaria-endemic regions. The deficiency increases the susceptibility of red blood cells to oxidative stress, which in turn makes it harder for the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, to survive and reproduce within these cells. This protective effect has led to a higher prevalence of G6PD deficiency in areas where malaria is common. 🦟
