Overwintering greens

Overwintering brassicas, such as kale, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, can be a rewarding way to extend your gardening season into the colder months. Start by planting seeds now, allowing the plants to establish before the first frost. These hardy vegetables thrive in cooler temperatures and can withstand light frosts, which often improve their flavor. To protect them from harsh winter conditions, use mulch, row covers, or cold frames. Regular watering when the weather is dry is essential. Pests are less common during the winter so in areas with mild winters they can be easier to grow than summer crops. With proper care, overwintering brassicas can provide fresh, nutritious produce throughout the winter and into early spring.
