Growing fava beans

Growing fava beans, also known as broad beans, is a rewarding endeavor for gardeners. These hardy, cool-weather plants can be sown in early spring or fall. In my area I sow them in September or October. They thrive in well-drained, loamy soil and prefer full to partial sun. Plant seeds about 1-2 inches deep and 6 inches apart, ensuring rows are spaced 2-3 feet apart. Fava beans are relatively low-maintenance, requiring regular watering and occasional staking as they grow tall and sturdy. They also enrich the soil by fixing nitrogen, making them an excellent choice for crop rotation. With proper care, you’ll enjoy a bountiful harvest of nutritious beans in about 90 days.
